3 Qualities that Prove You Have a Good Friend in Your Life

What are the qualities of a good friend?

One of the most important factors of happiness in life, is the relationships that people maintain with each other. Including the quality of friends and acquaintances in our social circles. Having good friends is beneficial in many ways. But how can you tell if someone in your life is a good friend? Lifestyle Writer Lauren Holliday suggests that “Good friends don’t encourage bad habits, and they don’t introduce you to new ones. Good friends don’t want anything from you. They don’t use you or manipulate you. They love you for who you are, not what you have. Good friends are hard to find, but they’re out there.”

Importance of Connection in a Relationship

Here are a few important qualities to look for when making friends:

1) Acceptance

When people try to make friends, we often seek out individuals who have identical characteristics to our own. Mainly because it takes little effort to like familiar people. Familiar people have predictable tastes and interests. But this is a lazy way of making friends. It’s more important to seek out acceptance in a friendship, than similarity. Similarity might make you feel comfortable, but only acceptance can make you feel secure. Friends who accept you, are reliable through thick and thin. They never judge your shortcomings, and you can always count on them to do right by you.

2) Loyalty

Loyalty is defined as a strong feeling of support or allegiance. It’s the act of showing consideration to someone, regardless of what prevailing circumstances dictate. Loyalty is a very rare attribute to find in people. Especially because modern society celebrates and rewards vanity. Loyalty in a friend means your relationship with them will last for a long time. It means your friend is invested in the relationship at a deep emotional level. The only reason people show loyalty, is because they’ve developed a sense of devotion to a relationship.

3) Trust

Friends aren’t just people you can share good times with. Friends are also people you can depend on. They honor their word, and always speak the truth. They know how to keep secrets, and never contribute to instability. Having a friend you can trust, means that you’re free to relax. You’re free to focus on evolving your relationship, without worrying about disappointment. Trustworthiness is an assurance that your friend won’t let you down.

Conclusion

The bottom-line when it comes to making friends is simple. Gravitate towards good people. If someone you know demonstrates admirable qualities, then that’s a signal that those qualities will have a positive impact on your life. Instead of using superficial reasons to connect with people, figure out what their values are.
