Healthcare Simplified: 4 Basic Instructions on How to Do Breast Self-Exams

Breast self-exams may not be a specialized way to diagnose cancer. But, they still create a chance to detect lumps that need treatment. At the very least, breast self-exams allow women to become familiar with their bodies. Pay attention to unusual symptoms that could be worsening over time. If you make a habit of keeping watch for irregularities, cancerous cells can be removed before lumps become malignant.

Prevention is Better than Cure:

The Women’s Center explains that “When combined with regular mammography, and a clinical breast exam performed at annual checkups, breast self-examination plays an important role in early detection. Doing breast self-examinations allows you to become familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel. This can help you notice any changes, and get medical advice as early as possible.” Here’s a quick guide on the ideal way to perform breast self-examinations:

1.    Get the Timing Right:

For younger women, self-exams shouldn’t necessarily be done at random. It’s best to wait until a few days after a menstrual cycle ends. This is because breasts tend to be less swollen and sensitive immediately after periods.  On the other hand, post-menopausal women can self-examine at any time of the month.

2.    Lubricate with Moisturizer:

Bumps on the skin are easier to feel when palms and fingers are moisturized. Once you’ve undressed for an exam, apply a generous amount of lotion or baby oil to your hands and breasts. Then, stand in front of a mirror to begin scrutinizing your body. Look for any changes in the size, shape, or contour of your breasts. Also, look for any changes on the surface of your skin. Unusual dimples, redness, or scaliness could be cause for alarm.

3.    Feel for Bumps and Lumps:

Using your fingers, gently caress and press to check if you can feel prominent lumps on your breasts. Be sure to feel all the way around the breast. Starting from your collarbone, and moving towards under the armpit. Then feel from your armpit, all the way to the base of your torso.

4.    Visit a Doctor Immediately if You Sense Anything Out of the Ordinary:

If by chance you do find a lump on your body, don’t panic. Lumps can be caused by a number of ailments other than cancer. The best course of action under such circumstances is to seek an expert opinion. Don’t hesitate to have lumps examined by a doctor just to be on the safe side.

If you’re not sure how to do a breast self-exam, or when the best time is to perform one, consult with a physician about what would be appropriate. Basic preventive measures are always a good idea.
