5 Things Should Never Shared on Social Media

What are the things shouldn't shared on Social Media?

Unless you live under a rock, chances are you use social media in some way, shape, or form, every day.  If you aren’t connecting with friends there, you’re either scrolling, following or clicking to get a daily dose of entertainment.  Social media can certainly be a rewarding experience.  But there are actually some risks to beware of online.  When social media is misused, unsuspecting people can end up getting victimized by trolls, criminals and hackers.

Think Before You Click:

Career Guidance Counselor/Writer Lida Citroën cautions that, “When it first launched, social media was a fun place. There was a belief that what you posted on your online profiles or timelines was only distributed to friends, family, and those contacts with whom you chose to share. Today, however, as social media permeates all aspects of our personal and professional lives, what you post online can have serious and lasting consequences.”

Here are a few examples of social media no-go zones:

1) Government-Issued ID

Regardless of the circumstances, never allow yourself to post images of official ID on social media.  Any criminal with Internet access can use this for identity theft.

2) Photos of Your Credit Cards

People often like to post images of money and bank cards online to show off their wealth.  But white-collar criminals can also use such posts to commit theft and fraud.

3) Viral Surveys

Viral surveys seem like an innocent way to interact with followers.  But identity thieves actually use such surveys to phish for answers to security questions.

4) Controversial Politics

The Internet is a very unfriendly place when it comes to politics.  The best way to avoid arguments and confrontations is to post things which are neutral in nature.

5) What Happened in Vegas

Wild parties shouldn’t be memorialized on interment.  They should be cherished as fond memories.  There’s no need to create a public record of events which could compromise your reputation, or expose you to public condemnation.

Conclusion

The reality about social media is that it’s a communal space.  It’s important to remember this detail any time you log on and start using social media.  Avoid doing risky things on the Internet, and always behave in a civil manner.
