5 Helpful Recommendations on How to Learn a New Language

How to learn a new language?

So, you’ve made the big decision. You’ve rolled up your sleeves and committed to learning a new language.  This is a good thing, but it’s important to start strong, and finish strong, with your objective.  Even though you might have the best of intentions at the beginning of your journey, the truth is that learning languages is hard.  There are moments when you’ll feel like giving up. But that doesn’t have to happen, no matter how challenging the process becomes.

Stay the Course

Teacher Kieran Ball explains that, “The feeling of frustration is a normal one that everybody goes through when learning a new language. When you learn any other subject such as math or science, you tend to learn how to do something, and then that’s it. However, with foreign languages, you learn how to use them, but then there’s another step; you have to be able to use them instantly, and this is what can cause the greatest frustration.”

Here are a few tips on how to keep hope alive when learning a second language:

1) Don’t Expect Overnight Success

The older A person is, the more strenuous it is to absorb and retain new information.  Especially information as complex as a language.  If you’re learning a second language, make peace with the fact that it’s going to take a long time to memorize words.

2) Use Multiple Learning Styles

There are many different ways to grasp a new language and become fluent in it. People can learn from literature, from listening to music/media, from casual conversations, or even from tutoring.  Take advantage of all of these channels.  You never know which one could end up resonating with you.

3) Practice, Practice, Practice

It’s one thing to learn the grammatical rules and vocabulary of a language, but it’s another thing to speak it without an accent, or any verbal missteps.  That’s why practice is key. Practice reading, practice writing, and practice speaking at every opportunity.

4) Immerse Yourself

Most language-related products and courses create the impression that people can learn a language, simply by studying for one hour a day.  But the truth is it takes a lot more engagement than this to really develop fluent skills. In order to learn faster, it’s best to eat, sleep and breathe the language itself. 24/7.

5) Make it Fun

It’s good to learn the formalities of a language from books and classrooms, but don’t forget that language is an instrument of culture.  This means the most gratifying way to develop an emotional connection to a language is by indulging in its pop culture.  Watch some movies, and listen to some music.  Savoring the arts can help you fall in love with a language and its speakers.

Conclusion

Learning a second language can certainly be taxing, but it can also be an exciting adventure.  Especially when you consider the fact that language is a gateway to discovering the beauty and the vibrance of other cultures. Being multilingual is like having a superpower. It gives people a perspective on humanity that is broad and multifaceted.
