5 Helpful Habits that Improve Creativity

What are habits that boost creativity?

When economy’s go through episodes of disruption, such as the one triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, people end up dealing with a lot of uncertainty.  Companies and individuals alike are forced to set aspirations aside in order to focus on survival.  Depending on your perspective, moments of adversity can either represent insurmountable obstacles, or unique opportunities.  If you are rigid about reacting to difficult situations, chances are a crisis will overrun you.  On the other hand, if you’re willing to be creative in response to adversity, not only do you have a better chance of surviving, you just might thrive as well.  But what does it take to be constructively creative?  How does one tap into this precious resource? Good Ideas Yield Good Outcomes:

There’s a reason why they say necessity is the mother of invention.  This is because challenging moments might be uncomfortable to endure, but they also trigger human instincts in a way that solves problems.  Therefore, the more creative you are while tackling a crisis, the more you expand your knowledge and increase your capacity to withstand similar experiences in future.  To put it in the words of Yale Research Scientist Zorana Ivcevic Pringle, “Creativity changes the individual and contributes to their well-being. For instance, creativity in how people deal with challenging emotional situations can make them more successful in addressing these challenges.”

How to develop habit of creative thinking?

Here are a few tips on how to sharpen your creativity:

1) Be Structured

Chaos sows confusion, but order fosters innovation.  If you want to be more creative, place yourself in an environment that is devoid of distractions and interference.  This will make it easier to concentrate on coming up with good ideas.

2) Reflect

Creativity is much like eating.  It’s a process that requires digestion.  If you allow yourself to be a perpetual consumer of information without taking any time to process it, not only will you lack the space to think, you’ll also forget most of what you learn in real time.

3) Take Notes

Regardless of whether you’re a genius, or someone of average intellect, no human being has the brainpower to memorize everything.  Keep a journal of your thoughts and actions.  Use a system of records to brainstorm and develop concepts which help you solve problems.

4) Learn

Being educated isn’t a matter of going to school and putting your feet up after graduation.  Learning is a lifelong process of study and discovery.  If a crisis has forced you to confront unexpected risks, read about them.  Learn everything you can to protect yourself from being vulnerable in future.

5) Be Persistent

There’s a difference between people who fail, and people who succeed.  Failures fall down once, and they never get back up.  Success stories fall down seven times, and rise again eight.  Follow the examples of the success stories in your life.  Commit to rising again the way they did.

Conclusion

You don’t have to be some kind of a guru or prodigy to be a creative person.  It’s all about following the fundamentals of active consciousness.  Be in tune with your mind, and be informed about your environment.  Know when to confront things at a granular level, and discern when it’s best to focus on the big picture.  Be organized in preparation, and be efficient in execution.  Creativity can only exist when organic ideas are acted upon with disciplined ingenuity.
