4 Simple Strategies to Transform Yourself into a Strong Communicator

How to be a good communicator?

Communication is one of life’s great mysteries. Everybody understands how important it is to communicate in relationships. However, being a good communicator takes a lot of work. As frustrating as it is to experience obstacles during communication, it’s still possible to master the art of communication through practice. All it takes is a willingness to be mindful of one’s behavior. Business Columnist Peter Economy advises that “Great communicators are competent and have vast knowledge about their areas of expertise. They are prepared to show people that their communication is valuable… They place high importance on providing effective and authentic communication because they want to keep an environment of respect and engagement.”

Here are a few quick tips on how to be an effective communicator:

1) Be a Good Listener

People often forget that communication is a two-way street. If you expect other people to understand what you want to say, you also have to be willing to understand what other people have to say. This all starts with intentional, focused listening.

2) Modulate Your Voice

Voice intonation refers to the changes in volume and pitch of a person’s voice. One method a speaker can use to emphasize meaning behind their words is by adjusting their tone during speech. Altering your tone of voice always sets the mood of a conversation.

3) Use Consistent Body Language

Whenever you interact with others, nonverbal gestures can actually undermine your intended message if they don’t match what you’re saying. Even though body language tends to be instinctive, try to modify it in a way that always matches verbal speech.

4) Make Eye Contact

Eye contact is essential for strong communication because it establishes a connection with the person you’re engaging with. Eye contact is the most direct nonverbal way to either ask for someone’s attention, or to give them yours in kind.

Conclusion

Regardless of which technique you use to enhance your communication skills, the most important component of effective communication is emotional intelligence. Being in tune with whether your listener is feeling happiness, sadness, fear, surprise, anger, or disgust should inform your approach towards others. When you adapt to your listener’s emotional state of mind, your communication will be received as genuine and sincere.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
