4 DOs and DON’Ts on How to Improvise Effectively

How to Improvise Effectively?

If you’ve ever been through an emergency situation, there’s a good chance you had to improvise in order to survive an ultimatum.  Improvising is a life-skill which people apply to all kinds of circumstances.  But it has particular value within the realm of business.  The English dictionary defines improvisation as “The art or act of composing, uttering executing or arranging anything without previous preparation.” Or to put it simply – thinking on your feet. Improvising doesn’t always feel comfortable. But when done right, it can help people overcome tremendous odds.

Here are a few tips on how to practice strong improvisation:

1) DO Learn from The Best

Even though it might feel as if you’re the only one who’s experienced the frustrations you’re going through, chances are someone else has walked the same path. And made it through.  Step out of your own pressure cooker and take some time to learn from their example.  Seek advice from them if it’s someone you know, or merely study their success story if it’s in the public domain.

2) DON’T Overthink Anything

The easiest way to adapt to challenging circumstances is to keep an open mind.  Stop trying to look for explanations, and focus on building solutions.  Human beings have a natural instinct to seek out balance and closure in life.  Especially when we’ve been through trauma.  However, if you truly want to survive and make progress during challenging events, it’s necessary to minimize time spent deliberating questions.

3) DO Be Decisive

Improvising is an urgent process.  It requires the ability to make critical decisions with speed and intention.  Once you’ve developed a viable solution to an existing problem, exercise your judgment without second-guessing yourself.  Depending on how much you stand to lose, hesitation can turn into a crutch which keeps you running around in circles.

4) DON’T Expect Everything to Fall in Place

Improvising is suspenseful for one simple reason.  It doesn’t provide any guarantees.  There’s no way of telling if things will go well, or if things will go badly.  This uncertainty is exactly why it’s best to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best, when improvising.  Act from a place of faith even when things aren’t picture perfect.

Conclusion

Life isn’t always neat and tidy.  It isn’t always possible to have all the right answers.  But just because people go through trying times doesn’t mean things have to come to a standstill.  When the going gets tough, the tough have to get going.  That means being able to think on the fly and make good choices.  Especially when you don’t have the time to confirm that your strategies are bulletproof.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
