4 DOs and DON’Ts on How to Avoid Bad Habits that Interfere with Learning

How to avoid bad study habits?

Did you know that when it comes to learning new things, you could be your own worst enemy?  Most people who struggle with the step-by-step process of learning, usually make avoidable mistakes that sabotage comprehension.  They either underestimate the difficulty of what they’re trying to learn, or they overlook the fact that learning demands full psychological engagement.  If you want to learn something new, you have to immerse yourself fully into absorbing information, and retaining it.

Follow the Fundamentals

Author Jeff Haden suggests that, “While it's nice to think you can hack your way to success, whenever you try to accomplish a huge goal – like starting and growing a business – skills matter.  Who you know is certainly important. But what you know, and what you can do, matters a whole lot more. Which means the faster you learn, the more successful you can be.”

Here are a few common mistakes to steer clear of when learning new things:

1) DON’T Stay Thirsty all the Time

Hydration is the single most powerful secret ingredient to learning abilities.  When the brain is hydrated, it functions at peak performance.  You will remember more, and you will understand more, immediately after drinking a glass of water.

2) DO Use Memorization Shortcuts

Unless you’re some kind of a prodigy, chances are your brain needs emphasis and repetition to cling on to elaborate information. Shortcuts like acronyms or mnemonic devices are a great way to give the brain a memorization boost.

3) DON’T Forget to Take Notes

If you’re learning something new, take notes so that you can refer to them later.  New information has a difficult time embedding into our brains’ long-term memory centers.  Keeping a diary of notes is a great way to remind yourself about what you’ve learnt, in case you forget about it in the short-term.

4) DO Give Your Brain Some Rest

Short term memories are only converted into long-term memories in the brain when it’s given time to catalog information. This is one of the reasons why sleep is very important.  When people are at rest, our brains still function in the background by organizing our thoughts and memories.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, learning new things is an enlightening experience.  Unfortunately, learning isn’t exactly a walk in the park, all the time.  Depending on how technical the subject matter is, learning can actually start to feel like a burden for people.  The bad news is that learning takes work, and sacrifice.  But there’s good news as well though. In spite of the strain involved in learning, there are techniques people can use to increase knowledge.  It’s all a matter of exercising mindful learning techniques.
