4 Core Concepts You Can Use to Develop Emotional Stability in Life

What is Emotional Stability?

Emotional stability is one of the most important pathways to personal fulfillment. Unfortunately, being in control of emotions is far easier said than done. Life is an unpredictable circus. And despite anyone’s best intentions, adversity can provoke all sorts of extreme and destructive emotions in people. Educational Psychologist Kathryn Garforth suggests that “Emotional stability provides individuals with the ability to take problems they face in stride. This allows them to continue on to reach their goals. They are able to embrace changes, and use challenges as opportunities to learn and grow… Simply put, emotional stability is an individual’s ability to stay level-headed in stressful situations.”

Here are a few tips on how to foster emotional stability:

1) Stay Informed

The easiest way to make emotionally damaging choices in life is to exist in a state of ignorance.  The more knowledgeable and informed you are, the less uncertainty you have to deal with.  The less uncertainty you have to deal with, the less you have to worry about emotional volatility.

2) Be Open-Minded

Stubbornness is a characteristic that limits people in many different ways.  Especially when it comes to emotions.  Regardless of the circumstances at hand, keeping an open mind makes it possible to think creatively and critically.  It enables people to confront dilemmas with problem-solving, rather than tantrums.

3) Meditate

Life gets so busy that people rarely take the time to reset.  Not only is this unhealthy from a physical standpoint, it also leads to emotional dysfunction.  Using a meditation routine creates opportunities to reconcile emotional disturbances and recharge.

4) Make Confident Decisions

Allowing your sense of self-worth to depend exclusively on other people’s opinions breeds insecurity.  This is why confidence is such an important component of self-actualization.  When a person has enough self-assurance to be decisive, this confidence acts as an anchor against the forces of criticism, self-doubt, overthinking and so on.

Conclusion

The first step towards being in charge of your emotions, is to acknowledge them. Explore the many different ways they fluctuate, and get to the root cause of what makes you feel the way you feel. If you recognize any forms of impulsiveness, deliberate on what you can do to enhance your discipline. Stabilizing your emotions helps to keep irrational behavior in check. Which ultimately leads to enhanced decision-making overall.
