3 Steps to Help Calm Down When the Internet Pushes Your Buttons

How to managed when your buttons get pushed?

If you spend a lot of time on social media, you’ve probably watched a lot of triggering viral videos lately.  People are bickering about masks, politics, conspiracy theories and all kinds of divisive issues.  It’s enough to make anybody scream.  What’s worse is that all this rage is a red flag. Because the last thing society needs right now is more angry people. IT Editor Jamillah Knowles suggests that “One of the well-known explanations for the high levels of outrage on the Web is the sense that people cannot be held to account for their actions…  generally, when angry mobs register their displeasure online, the worst can come out with little thought to possible consequences.” Anger isn’t bad just because it’s uncomfortable, anger is also unhealthy.

Here are three steps to keep your emotions in check the next time the Internet riles you up:

1) Think about the Big Picture

In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to get carried away by anger and obsess about winning an ongoing argument. However, you should also consider whether winning a shouting match will produce any meaningful benefits. If not, stay calm.

2) Be Willing to Compromise

Having things your way is at the root of most disagreements. The less willing you are to sacrifice your own expectations for the greater good, the easier it is to get stuck in an endless back and forth. Open your mind to cooperation, and negotiation.

3) Forgive

Sometimes the only way to move on in life is to let go of the past and start afresh. If the conflict you have with someone is based on old baggage, consider burying the hatchet. Work to establish a new beginning.

Conclusion

Before you ever lose your cool and do something regrettable because of the internet, take a moment to pause and reflect on the consequences of your outrage. Will throwing a tantrum cause anything to change for the better? Will tearing other people down do anything to improve the realities of your life? If the answer is NO, pause and find a better way to use your energy. Abandoning courtesy just so that you can prove a point or get the last word does more to harm your life than to elevate it.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
