3 Important Things You Should Do to Help Your Kids Cope with Fear

How to help child overcome fear?

2020 is going to be a year for the history books.  So many bad things have happened just six months into this year, that the whole entire world is reeling in disbelief.  And everyone is affected, including our children.  Much like every adult, kids have had a front row seat to all the chaos that’s unfolded. Be it school closures, virus fears, social justice protests, or contentious politics, they’re impacted by it all. Psychotherapist/Author Iben Sandahl suggests that “Children need to be calmed down and reassured… It’s important to make them feel comfort even though we can feel insecure ourselves... Stay strong and let them know that you are not worried because this is a time when they need to lean on you.”

Here are a few tips on how to alleviate fear in your kids:

1) Explore Their Fears

Make some time to have a candid conversation with your kids.  Talk to them intimately about what’s going on, or what’s on their mind.  Pay attention to the specific things which could be feeding into their stress, and offer a voice of encouragement.  Use your wisdom as a parent to let them know that adversity might be painful, but it can be overcome.

2) Respect Their Concerns

Sometimes the things which worry kids don’t make sense to adults.  But all the same, avoid dismissing your children’s feelings just because they seem trivial to you.  As you talk to them about how they’re doing, make your kids feel heard and respected.  This sets a good example of how to use mindfulness as a way to process and manage emotions.

3) Show them How to Meditate

Meditation is scientifically proven to help people manage stress.  Most people perceive meditation as a mature exercise.  However, children can also benefit from using mental silence to pause and reflect.  Whether it’s through breathing exercises, prayer, silent introspection, or other such soothing activities, meditate with your kids.  And teach them to meditate when you’re not there.

Conclusion

Even though it’s tough to deal with everything that’s going on as an adult, don’t forget to cater to your kids’ emotional needs if you’re a parent.  Children can be smart and strong, but they don’t have enough maturity to deal with traumatic situations in a healthy way.  Times like these are exactly when parents should rise to the occasion, and do what is necessary to act as a pillars.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
